Life at the Academy

rpa02

The primary role of the Western Australia Police Academy is to train new recruits within a 26-week period to begin their policing career. The Academy has approximately 200 new recruits who attend classes from Monday to Friday (7.00 a.m. – 4.00 p.m.).
During this time, cadets are trained to a standard of excellence with demanding physical training and law studies forming a part of their daily work.
Cadets study Criminal Law, Police Procedures, The Law of Evidence, Patrol and Investigation Techniques, Traffic Law and Procedure, Written and Oral Communications, Interviewing Techniques and Statement Taking.
Recruits are also instructed in physical fitness, driving techniques, self-defence techniques and the use of firearms, batons, survival techniques, specialist investigative training, and ethics and cultural diversity.
The dining room comfortably accommodates 350 persons at one sitting. Self serve is the norm. Each residential room is well equipped with a wardrobe and built-in study desk. On each floor there are the kitchens with microwave and tea and coffee making facilities.
The academy offers a number of practical training facilities that replace the surroundings which trainees will face on duty. There is a fully fitted shop with groceries, videos, newspapers, and other goods. It allows wide ranging training scenarios from simple shoplifting to fraud. At the academy you can see a small police station with general office, public counter, and cell corridor. This provides practical exercises in reception of prisoners and dealing with enquiries from members of the public. At the room (typical for a bank) cadets have the opportunity to deal with robberies and hostage situations. To facilitate interview training there are six fully fitted, sound proofed interview rooms with CCTV (closed-circuit television) equipment and connected to a dedicated control room. Three rooms have been furnished with second hand furniture for training wide ranging scenarios such as domestic violence, house breakings, searches and murders. Cadets have the opportunity to practise in giving evidence in court when they have lessons at the model of a court room.
Classes begin promptly at 9.00 a.m. There are some rules:

  1. the Academy is a smoke-free institution; smoking is not permitted in the building or on the grounds.
  2. recruits are not allowed to use mobile phones during classes.
  3. consumption of alcoholic beverages is not permitted on the academy grounds.
  4. administrative offices are to be entered on official business only.

At the completion of their 26 weeks, recruits partake in a graduation parade within the Academy grounds where they parade to family and friends and are congratulated by the Commissioner of Police.
